Chapter Seven

Ivory watched the house he’d grown up in with a great measure of anxiety. He’d lied to his parents, telling them he would come there two nights from now, when he had no intention of waiting. He’d only delayed the trip until this hour because he’d wanted to wait for Rio, Wallace, and the others to arrive. But now that he was here, he honestly didn’t know if it had been a good idea to contact his family at all.

“Don’t worry about it, Ivory,” Rio told him in an encouraging voice. “You said they sounded really happy to hear from you. Maybe they changed their mind about what happened.”

Yes, they had, but could Ivory really trust them? After all, Ivory was asking a lot of his father. A creep and a criminal Bill might be, but he was still their blood. Once, Bill and Allan had been very close.

“So what now?” Wallace asked, leaning against a nearby tree. “Do you want us to sneak in and spy?”

“It would be easy for me,” Blue pointed out. “No one would even know I was there.”

That was quite true. Smaller shifters could go unnoticed, but sometimes even birds or tinier mammals were spotted. However, a butterfly was beautiful and innocuous enough so as not to draw the attention of even the most vigilant watchman. But Ivory had never felt comfortable with sending Blue alone anywhere. The butterfly just seemed so fragile, like he would break if a person just touched him in the wrong way.

“Avery and I could join him,” Raven suggested, as if guessing Ivory’s thoughts. “It’s dark enough so we won’t be spotted.”

Avery nodded. “And there are trees, so my plumage won’t give us away.”

It seemed they had thought of everything. “Maybe,” Ivory replied, musing over their words. “I don’t know. I just have a bad feeling.”

In truth, there was no reason why he shouldn’t go see them right now. After so many years, he was itching to do it. He’d finally admitted to himself that he’d missed them. Perhaps he was seeing things where there was nothing to be seen.

Just as he thought this, a car approached and stopped in front of the gates of the large mansion. After a few seconds, they opened and the vehicle drove inside. It had been enough for Ivory to realize who was inside.

“I knew I shouldn’t have trusted them,” he said between gritted teeth. “I just called this morning, and here they are, already summoning Bill.”

“Maybe there’s another explanation to this,” Rio suggested, his voice weak. When Ivory looked at him, he saw his cousin looked paler than Ivory had ever seen him.

Ivory wanted to believe that. He wanted to think his parents hadn’t betrayed him. He struggled to think things through and not take rash decisions. They had seemed enthusiastic to help him. Perhaps it wasn’t that they had meant to deceive. Perhaps things were exactly the other way around.

Ivory’s father had always been the one with the plan, so to speak.
